Hong Kong was under British rule for about 150 years before reuniting with China. As a result, English is an official language of Hong Kong, and you will find many locals who speak it fluently.
On a sunny day, nothing beats a day-trip to Victoria Harbour, a narrow strip of water that separates Hong Kong Island from Kowloon. Chinese junk boats still cruise up and down the harbor as they have done since the 2nd Century.

For a change of scenery, you do not need to go far. Although Hong Kong is undeniably cosmopolitan, just under half of the city is covered in forest. There are many hiking trails that zigzag through the hills that surround the city. One of the most rewarding trails is the Lion Rock Hike, which is less than 2 kilometers from start to finish. The trail is home to a population of playful macaque monkeys, who boldly approach hikers for snacks.
