Situated at the confluence (junction) of two rivers, Ghent is thought to be named after the Celtic word “ganda,” which means confluence. Being a student town, remote workers can enjoy all the fun things students can do during their coliving stay.

A great way to learn about that history of Ghent is to take a boat tour along the canals - they’re offered daily from spring to early fall and on weekends in the late fall and winter. July is a festival month with a jazz festival, which is followed by the Ghent Festival - a mix of music and theatre performances with tons of free things to see.

It is best to get around Ghent in this order: by foot, by bike, or by bus. Cars are banned in the city center, the largest car-free city center in Belgium. The good news is there’s no vehicle traffic to worry about in these areas. Bike rentals and tours are plentiful. Situated between Antwerp, Bruges, and Brussels, it’s easy to make a day trip to these cities by train in under an hour.

Ghent is a food and drinks paradise for digital nomads on their coliving adventure. While much of the Belgian diet is not particularly healthy, Ghent highly promotes vegetarianism - this includes meat-free Thursdays in school cafeterias. It’s a great place to try beer; with over 250 kinds around the city, there are many nights out to enjoy. For something sweet, Ghent is known for purple cone-shaped, jelly-filled candies called “cuberdons” or “neuzekes,” meaning noses.
