Garneau
Modern Garneau is an eclectic mix of residential, business, and university life, and over time a bohemian-like atmosphere has formed. Today, 109 Street is one of the neighborhood's key economic areas and home to the historic Garneau Theatre. The modern-style structure, constructed in 1940 by architect William Blakey, was restored to its original condition in 2009 and often screens independent and cult films. Within the same block are the popular Transcend Coffee store, Whimsical Cake Studio, and Rosso Pizzeria. Next door to the University of Alberta and its teaching hospital, the established neighborhood of Garneau bustles with people year-round, perched on the southern bank of the North Saskatchewan River. With an arthouse cinema, and independent cafes and shops lining many of the major streets, the vibrant energy expands well beyond the school year.
