Eixample, which translates to "extension" in recognition of its status as the newer section of the city, is a vast area that extends to the left and right of Passeig de Gràcia, north of Plaça de Catalunya.
The region is, in fact, an extension of the city that significantly benefits from the ingenious urban planning that Catalan engineer Cerdes implemented in the 1850s. The area is organized in a grid, with each unit featuring an inner courtyard, as Cerdes had a preference for straight lines.
