Chongqing is Chengdu’s smaller cousin in western China and though it might be less popular it has a lot to offer to digital nomads and many coliving and coworking spaces are available in this city, whose name means “Double Celebration”.

The financial sector with over 200 firms based in Chongqing in 2019 and the logistics sector are two important pillars of the local economy. Recently, there has also been a strong focus on green manufacturing in the city.

In their free time, remote workers can join the many Yangtze River cruises that start from Chongqing and go down to the famous Three Gorges Dam with some stunning scenery along the way.

Outside the city visitors can also enjoy hiking in the surrounding mountains or discover the Buddhist carvings at the Dazu Rock UNESCO World Heritage Site. Out on the Ming mountain intrepid travelers can also roam Fengdu Ghost City. According to legends, the ancient town is over 2,000 years old and that should guarantee plenty of ghosts.

- Over 8 million people live in Chongqing.
- During World War II Chongqing was temporarily the capital of China when the Japanese occupied Nanjing.
- Chongqing used to a part of Sichuan province but became a directly managed municipality in 1997. You can still find plenty of spicy food though.
- The city’s climate is subtropical with many monsoons throughout the year. In fact, it’s China’s rainiest city!
- Chongqing is built across many hills.
- Harvard University partnered with the city to renovate a banknote printing factory into a trendy art space called TestBed 2.
- Chiang Kai-Shek’s former military headquarters just outside Chongqing are now a popular museum.
- Chongqing might just be perfect the city for digital nomads who love trainspotting. The Chongqing Rail Transit No.2 line goes right through a block of flats. Liziba station is right in the middle of floors six to eight in a residential tower block with 19 floors.
- Those who are up for the challenge can try the so-called “Hello Kitty Hot Pot from Hell”, which is quite possibly one of the spiciest dishes on Earth.

Over the last years, China’s rainiest city and fourth-biggest municipality, after Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin, has attracted many foreign workers. Coliving spaces and other services aimed at ex-pats have increased.
