Named after the massive redwood tree, Palo Alto is Spanish for “tall stick”. Like most of California, Palo Alto is very car-centric but offers a great bus system along with some free shuttles to the Stanford University campus and other attractions. If you’re downtown this area is very walkable. The city is very flat and offers many “bike boulevards” to cycle along.

You’ll quickly notice that most attractions are in fact on the Stanford campus, including the hoover tower, several galleries, and some gardens. Off-campus there are many other attractions including tech-related museums, a farmers market, and a beautiful theatre from the 1920s.

Food is a way of life in Palo Alto, as is coffee. Talk to any coffee snob on the street to find the best places to grab a fresh drip or a cold brew.
