The historic center serves as the beating heart of Lecce, allowing guests to explore the city’s majestic Baroque streets and iconic monuments entirely on foot. The neighborhood is a sensory delight, filled with an array of bars and restaurants perfect for savoring local flavors or enjoying an evening drink. As a vibrant year-round destination, Lecce offers a rich cultural calendar; the Paisiello, Roman, and ancient amphitheaters host world-class musical and theatrical performances, while historic venues like the Castle of Charles V and the Palmieri Foundation provide stunning backdrops for art exhibitions. For those drawn to craftsmanship, the old city is home to numerous artisan workshops where the traditions of Salento are still very much alive.
The Sea and Nature
Lecce is in a special place between the Adriatic and Ionian seas, which are both protected by old coastal towers that tell stories of the past. On the Ionian coast, destinations like Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo, and Santa Caterina offer soft sandy beaches and crystalline waters known for their infinite shades of blue and breathtaking reddish sunsets. In contrast, the Adriatic side greets the sunrise with deep cobalt waters lapping against a dramatic coastline of white and emerald rocks. This legendary shore—where Aeneas is said to have first landed at Porto Badisco—features must-visit gems like Castro, Santa Cesarea, and Otranto, home to a cathedral famous for its "Tree of Life" floor mosaic.
For nature enthusiasts, Salento is a sanctuary of biodiversity. Protected areas such as Le Cesine, Rauccio Park, and the Salina dei Monaci—a favored stop for migratory flamingos—offer serene trails for hiking and reflection. Beyond the coast, the landscape is dotted with ancient villages and fortified farmhouses, where centennial olive trees stand as silent witnesses to the region's rich archaeological and agricultural history.
