Namur is the relaxed capital of both Namur province and the Region of Wallonia. Nestled in the lush, green valleys, the city provides a calm and enjoyable place for digital nomads seeking a great coliving opportunity.
Getting around the small town is easy, especially by bike or on foot. There’s a bike-share program for commutes and private companies for longer rentals. Several mountain biking trails can be accessed from town. Busses are available, but when possible it’s amazing to take the ferry along the river.
Despite the calm, there’s plenty to do for remote workers making the most of their coliving adventure. First built in the year 937, the Citadel of Namur truly stands out as a landmark atop a rocky hill at the junction of two rivers. Despite enduring heavy destruction from the Germans in the wars, many architectural landmarks remain. For spectator sports, the city has a local soccer and baseball team. Swimming is a favorite pastime here - a visit to the Salzinnes communal pool is especially nice because it’s never crowded.
For a full taste of regional cuisine, a visit to Le Temps des Cerises is recommended - several kinds of local food and drink or available. The city’s oldest cafe is just over 400 years old - in celebration of this they crafted their own beer - it’s a light beer, but don't drink it too fast as it has an alcohol level of 7.5%.
Here are some fun facts about Namur:
- Due to its strategic position on routes to France, the city has seen many battles and sieges
- In an odd and fun embrace of regional folklore, locals participate in the “Fight for the Golden Stilt.” Two teams, the Mélans and the Avresses, dress in medieval clothes while standing on stilts and do battle in one of the town's main squares
- Although the city’s walls were said to be virtually impregnable, the city was seized in 1914 by German forces after only three days of fighting.
